While the students work on the value-driven curriculum, they will also learn the basics of how to take care of themselves and stay comfortable in a wilderness setting. They live a nomadic life style as they hike three to seven miles a day to different campsites. The most common obstacles to the youth are the loss of modern conveniences, change in diet, new physical demands, group and personal confrontation and the ongoing challenges associated with nature. During this time, they start making the basic tools of survival. They create shelters, eating utensils, a bow drill fire set and other tools needed for the journey. As the youth hike, eat and work in a small group setting, disruptive behaviors become focal points for group and individual attention. Challenging experiences break through facades, allowing individual problems and issues to surface. Soon, the youth begin to understand that their comfort is dependent upon their own choices and willingness to change.
